Since 2019, in western Mexico, the Benemérita Universidad de Guadalajara has consolidated important leadership in human rights. Previously, this role was held by a private university and the State Human Rights Commission. Currently, the University of Guadalajara stands out for presiding at the national level of the Network of University Rights Defender Organizations (REDDU Mexico) and for presiding at the international level of the Ibero-American Network of University Defenders (RIdDU).
This has been achieved through the figure of Ombudsperson of the UdeG headed by Dante Haro Reyes, a prominent academic belonging to the National System of Researchers, and who has managed to convene various national and international actors in the field of protection of fundamental rights. .
In this context, the UdeG held the 2024 University Human Rights Award ceremony on December 10. This award, which distinguishes work in areas such as the promotion, research, prevention and protection of fundamental rights, is awarded in five categories: Academy in person, academy institution, activism, public service and youth.

During the ceremony, Dante Haro, Ombudsman of University Rights at the UdeG, highlighted the relevance of this recognition as it coincides with International Human Rights Day.
“We are convinced that higher education plays a crucial role in building a culture of peace in the country, by promoting dialogue and understanding between different sectors of society,” emphasized Haro Reyes.
In the physical academy category, the award was given to María Luisa García Batiz, Rector of the Centro Universitario de los Valles of the U. de G.
In the academy category for institutions, the recognition went to the University Court of the Autonomous University of Baja California.
The public service award was awarded to Itzcóatl Tonatiuh Bravo Padilla, Former Rector General of the UdeG, who has also been Rector of CUCEA, federal and local deputy, as well as councilor of the Guadalajara City Council.
In activism, the award went to José Benjamín González Mauricio, a prominent activist on sexual diversity issues in Jalisco.
In the youth category, Daniel Alonso Rodríguez Pérez, a student from Hidalgo nominated in 2017 for the Nobel Peace Prize, was recognized.

At the ceremony, the appointment of Peace Ambassadors was also granted, to personalities with outstanding careers in different areas of public life, who have demonstrated their work in the promotion and defense of human rights, as well as the dissemination of the culture of peace. .
Those honored were Pedro Gómez Limón, President of the Mechanism for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and Journalists of Jalisco; Claudia Robles Morales, Rector of the Enrique Díaz de León University of Jalisco; the Olympic athlete Citlali Cristian Moscote from the U. de G., and the activist Roberto Villanueva Guzmán from CDMX. These appointments given are recognition for their outstanding work and for the commitment to continue contributing significantly to the construction of a more just and peaceful society.
