The Department of Hydrometeorological Engineering of the UCV expects that during this month of January neutral conditions between the El Niño and La Niña phenomena will continue, with a decrease in rainfall compared to December, projected between 10 and 15 mm. This dryness could increase fire risks
The Department of Hydrometeorological Engineering of the Central University of Venezuela (UCV) presented its report on the rainfall recorded in December, reporting that it was “drier.”
In the report published this Thursday, January 2, the UCV indicates that rainfall during December reached only 15.1 millimeters, which represents a significant decrease compared to the monthly average of 44.1 mm, he reported. Cocuyo Effect.
This figure places December at a 30.3% probability of exceedance. 2024 has been one of the wettest years recorded at the UCV rainfall station, with a total of 1,178.9 mm of accumulated rain, well above the annual average of 893.8 mm.
This annual accumulation has a probability of exceedance of 89.7%, which classifies the year as “rainy”, almost bordering on the “extreme rainy” category, the document states.
Detailed analysis of rainfall behavior during 2024 shows considerable variability. Experts pointed out that from January to March, under the influence of the El Niño phenomenon, an extreme drought was experienced, while from April to July, the climate remained around average.
The report indicated that the months of August and September stood out for being extremely rainy, doubling the average figures due to the warming of the Atlantic Ocean and the tropical wave season. The Department added that October was considered a “normal” month, November was wetter than usual, and December, as mentioned, was extremely dry.
During December, five days of rain were recorded, below the historical average of eight days. The entire year had 131 days of rain, exceeding the average of 121.8 days. This year was also characterized by having fewer days of light rain (less than 10 mm) and more days with moderate rain (between 10 and 30 mm).

After five consecutive years of above-average precipitation, the data suggests a 6.7% chance of this trend continuing, which historically has never happened. Therefore, the statistical forecast for 2025 indicates a decrease in annual precipitation, which is expected to be below average.
The Department of Hydrometeorological Engineering expects that during this month of January there will continue to be neutral conditions between the El Niño and La Niña phenomena, with a decrease in rainfall compared to December, projected between 10 and 15 mm. This dryness could increase fire risks, they warned.
