The Foundation Council of the Andrés Bello Catholic University (UCAB) appointed the Jesuit priest Arturo Ernesto Peraza Celis, as the new rector of the institution for the period 2023-2027. Peraza was the current vice-rector of UCAB Guayana
The information was released by the secretary of the Council, Déborah Cordero, in which she specified that the appointment was unanimously approved by the members of the instance, “at the proposal of the RP Alfredo Infante, SJ, in his capacity as vice-chancellor- president of this Council and heard the opinion of the chancellor (of the university), Emmo. Mr. Cardinal Baltazar Enrique Porras Cardozo”.
Father Arturo Peraza was appointed by the Foundational Council, after the vacancy left by the rector Francisco José Virtuoso, who passed away on October 20, 2022. Since then, the academic vice-rector, José Francisco Juárez, has served as rector in charge, then to be designated by the University Council until the Foundational Council formalizes the name of the new ucabista authority.
For his part, the new rector thanked the Foundation Council in a message for the trust in appointing him rector of UCAB. “I think it is a reiteration of the trust in the entire team that accompanied the management of Father José Virtuoso because, ultimately, we were a team, we continue to be a team,” he said.
He pointed out that, with his appointment, “the Foundational Council is sending a message that there is continuity in the management, continuity in the project that we have outlined within the framework of these 70 years and within the model-project of the university that we are building together the entire university community. I also want to express my deep gratitude to all the members of UCAB Guayana, whom I had to accompany up to the present ”, he indicated.
At the meeting held on March 4, the Foundation Council also appointed Professor Jorge Luis Pernía Morales to succeed Father Peraza as Vice Chancellor of Extension of UCAB Guayana, for the period 2023-2027, “at the request of the rector in charge, Dr. José Francisco Juárez Pérez and having heard the opinion of the vice chancellor, RP Alfredo Infante, SJ”, informed the secretary of the Council, Déborah Cordero.
Pernía already held that position between 2016 and 2017. To date he is the director of International Cooperation at the university and, among other roles within the institution, he has been general director of postgraduate programs and director of UCAB Consultants.
The swearing-in date and inauguration of the new Chancellor and Vice Chancellor of Extension will be announced in the coming days. Until then, Professor José Francisco Juárez will continue to exercise functions as the highest UCABista authority, as will Father Arturo Peraza at UCAB Guayana.
Who is the father Peraza
Born in Caracas on November 20, 1965, Arturo Peraza, SJ, is a lawyer graduated with honors from UCAB and a PhD in Political Science from the Central University of Venezuela (UCV). Professor of undergraduate and postgraduate courses at UCAB and UCAB Guayana, since 1996, he was director of the SIC magazine of the Gumilla Center between 2007 and 2010, after which he became provincial of the Society of Jesus in Venezuela (2010-2016). ). Since July 2017, he has served as Vice Chancellor of Extension at UCAB Guayana, as well as Chancellor of the Loyola-Gumilla School in Puerto Ordaz.
