Two tons of oil are removed from beaches in Pernambuco

Government of Minas opens public consultation on highway concession

Two tons of oil were removed from beaches in Pernambuco between Sunday (2) and this Monday (3). Solid pieces of oil that resemble crude oil were initially found by a fisherman in the city of Tamandaré.Two tons of oil are removed from beaches in Pernambuco

According to the Research Center of the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) in the municipality of Pernambuco, most of the oil has already been removed, but the work to clean the beaches should continue this Tuesday.

This is not the first time oil slicks have appeared on beaches in the region this year. In August, oil pellets were collected on 10 beaches in Pernambuco, two in Paraíba, one in Bahia and another in Alagoas.

According to the coordinator of the Sustainable Tamandaré Long-Term Ecological Program, Professor Beatrice Padovane, the resurgence of this oil now in October is a cause for concern.

Last week, fragments of oil were also identified in the municipality of Coruripe, in Alagoas.

After analyzing the oil that appeared in August, Brazilian scientists concluded that the material is not the same type of oil from the 2019 environmental disaster. that it was dropped during oil tanker washing on the high seas.

Professor Beatrice Padovane, who works in environmental monitoring in the region, points out that the damage can go beyond the effects on tourism, because the oil can spread in the food chain of marine species in the region.

The oil pellets found this Sunday in Tamandaré still need to be analyzed to assess whether they are of the same nature as those found in August.
