One of the most important references in Brazilian basketball, Amary Pasos died this Thursday (12), in São Paulo, one day after turning 89 years old. World basketball champion in 1959 and 1963, and Olympic medalist (bronze in Rome 1960 and Tokyo 1964), Amaury is to date the only athlete to be elected “most valuable player” (MVP) twice, in different positions. (wing and point guard), to be included in the sport’s Hall of Fame. The cause of death was not revealed.

In note of regret, The Brazilian Basketball Confederation (CBB) mourned the death of the icon of the sport and declared three days of mourning within the entity.
“Basketball is in mourning. Brazil and the world lost this Thursday, December 12th, early in the morning, their idol and FIBA Hall of Famer, Amaury Pasos. At the age of 89, the two-time world champion and the only man to be the MVP of a World Cup twice, rested, passing away in São Paulo surrounded by his children, grandchildren and closest family members,” said the organization.
Known for his fine-tuned technique, Amaury was also a basketball legend at Corinthians, where he was two-time Brazilian champion and three-time São Paulo champion, between 1966 and 1972. Last October, Timão unveiled a bust in honor of Amaury Pasos, at Ginásio Wlamir Marques, which was attended by the former athlete. The São Paulo club also paid tribute to Amaury in a message published on Instagram.
“Amaury was a giant, a man in life and a legend in basketball. I am pleased to have had him as a friend and also as a coach. One of the greatest not only in Brazil, but also in history. It is an irreparable loss. Our A body has an expiration date here on Earth, but its legacy is eternal and its stories and deeds will be remembered for generations”, said Guy Peixoto, president of CBB.
Amaury Pasos’ wake began at 10 am and will continue until 6 pm (Brasília time) at Rua São Carlos do Pinhal, 376, in the capital of São Paulo.
