Two settlers held responsible for the murder of a young Mayangna

Violence against indigenous communities in Nicaragua continues to increase. On December 22, the murder of Roy Dilson Devis Blandón, a young Mayangna from the Betlehem community, was recorded.

The complaint was made public by the defender of indigenous rights and president of the Río Foundation, Amaru Ruiz.

Through his X account, the environmentalist wrote «#SOSMayangna Indigenous community members confirm the murder of another young Mayangna at the hands of settlers. The events occurred between the Betlehem community and Biltingni yesterday (Sunday) morning. The murdered indigenous young man corresponds to Roy Dilson Devis Blandón of Betlehem.

In addition, Ruiz reported that the residents identified those allegedly responsible for the crime. “The community members identify two settlers as the main suspects in the murder, Lesly Miranda and Oscar David Gonzales, who had several complaints against them, without the Police having acted.”

The defender insisted on the inaction of the police authorities in the face of the situation of violence faced by indigenous communities.

The Mayangna community has been the victim of a growing wave of violence and persecution by settlers, which has led to a climate of insecurity and fear in the area.

The Center for Legal Assistance to Indigenous Peoples estimates that in the last decade some 70 Miskito and Mayangna indigenous people of the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua have been murdered by invading settlers.

The situation on the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua is alarming. And the oppressive State, to simulate actions, blames other indigenous people for the murders of indigenous people, while the aggressors continue under its protection, stalking and misappropriating those lands that house the Bosawás biosphere reserve, the largest protected area in Central America.
