Two priests leave Nicaragua in a week, parishioners are concerned

In a week the departure of two parish priests has been known, this time it is Father Douglas Guevara. Who directed the Immaculate Conception of Mary parish, of the Diocese of the department of León.

In the social networks of the Church, it was reported about the departure of the priest, who is the seventh parish priest of that temple. It was unofficially known that he left the country due to the constant siege of police officers.

Members of the parish mourned his sudden departure. The publication reads that “the entire community of our parish thanks the priest Douglas Ramón Guevara Ávila, the seventh parish priest of our town who gave us 10 months of hard pastoral work, where love, effort and perseverance always stood out despite the many limitations of the way, always taken by the hand of the Lord and our Most Pure Lady».

Until last Sunday, July 9, the priest carried out his duties on a daily basis, as they revealed in their recent publications in which they broadcast Sunday masses. The parish priest was appointed to lead the Immaculate Conception of Mary church, in the western department of the country, since August 27, 2022.

For her part, the researcher Martha Patricia Molina also announced the departure of Father Guevara and assured that it is an exile. «The Sandinista dictatorship continues without giving truce to the priests. All priests currently have their lives in danger,” she reads in the post.

Four priests in exile in one month

This week the departure of the Spanish priest Jesús María Palma, from the San Isidro Labrador parish, in Jinotega, was announced. The parishioners point out that although they know that the religious’s mother was sick, she left the country without prior notice. There are currently 80 religious in exile.

Last June, two other priests from Bluefields went into exile for fear of being jailed. This past Sunday, July 9, the Police detained the priest of the Diocese of Siuna Fernando Zamora Silva and has kept Monsignor Rolando Álvarez behind bars for 11 months, for whom a day of prayer will be held in the coming days.
