The intense rains in the eastern part of Cuba are related to a trough that currently affects the eastern part of the Island.

MIAMI, United States. — Two people were reported missing after being swept away by the sudden flooding of the Sagua de Tánamo River, in the province of Holguín. The flood occurred this Thursday, as a consequence of the intense rains recorded this week in the eastern region of Cuba.

The rainfall is not directly associated with Tropical Storm Melissa, which remains almost stationary in the central Caribbean Sea, but with a trough that currently affects the East of the Island.

The local station of Sagua de Tánamo, Ecos de Sagua, shared on Facebook the report of journalist Yeletnys Robles Reve, who reported that the Temporary Working Group had been activated in the municipality to coordinate response actions in the face of weather conditions and the disappearance of citizens.

The delegate of the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) in the territory, José Ángel Legrá Pérez, offered an update on the ongoing case, although the report did not disclose additional details.

However, one of the missing was identified as Luis Pérez Rodríguez, a postal service worker in the town and previously linked to the Directorate of Statistics and Information. The identity of the second person was later confirmed as Antonio Angulo, a resident of the community of El Jobo, according to publications on social networks linked to the local government, such as Tanameno blogger.

The Moa Fire Department has joined the search and rescue efforts, according to the same source. So far, no traces of the missing have been found and local authorities presume that they could have drowned.

The rainfall that caused the river to flood was the result of an active tropical wave, according to the Cuban Institute of Meteorology (INSMET), which in your official forecast for this Friday He indicated that it would remain “cloudy from Camagüey to Guantánamo with some showers, rains and thunderstorms, which will extend into the night.”

Although Tropical Storm Melissa remains under surveillance, both INSMET and the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) agree that, until the date of the events, Melissa had not generated direct impacts in eastern Cuba. The system was still moving slowly through the central Caribbean, at a considerable distance from the national territory.
