Two people die in a traffic accident in Las Tunas

Havana/A traffic accident that occurred this Tuesday night, around 9:00 pm, on the highway that goes from Cauto to Caureje, in the province of Las Tunas, has left two people dead. The information has circulated on social networks and among relatives of the victims, in the absence of an official report in the state press. Some users name the victims like Kiki and Dairon.

The images shared show a person lying on the asphalt, while several onlookers remain around. The vehicle involved cannot be distinguished. For those who live in the area, the place is no stranger to these types of events: they speak of a dark stretch, with poor signage, where you drive practically “blind” at night.

Family and friends of the victims have expressed their pain publicly. Some of them also said that the accident caused traffic disruptions.

Less than ten days ago, a minibus overturned on the National Highway in Villa Clara, leaving one dead and at least 14 injured, according to independent press reports. Among them was Jose Luis Reyes Luisa 26-year-old trombonist from the urban group Velito el Bufón, who died hours later due to the severity of his injuries. Everything indicates that the cause of the accident was that the driver fell asleep at the wheel.

The numbers help to understand the magnitude of the accident rate on the country’s roads. According to the most recent official figures, Cuba closed 2025 with 7,538 accidents that resulted in the death of 750 people –18% more than the previous year– and 6,718 injured. In that same period, 1,119 people died on the roads in Spain, despite having a population approximately six times larger.

The information published in this regard this Monday by the National Road Safety Commission included the information that 98% of state drivers involved in accidents had had their licenses withdrawn for being “under the influence of alcohol.”

Drivers and specialists agree that there is no single factor for the accident rate on the Island. Added to the precariousness of the roads and poor lighting is the aging of the vehicle fleet, the lack of blood alcohol controls and the absence or poor condition of seat belts in many vehicles.
