Two new femicides in the first week of October, one in Havana and another in Granma

Havana/Two new femicides were recorded during the first week of October in Cuba. The Alas Tensas Gender Observatory reported this Wednesday the murders of Liudmila Álvarez Coll and Noralis Estenoz. Both cases had already emerged in complaints through social networks in previous days, but were not confirmed by any organization.

In the case of Noralis Estenoz, the NGO indicated that she was murdered on October 5 by her ex-partner in her home in the Versalles neighborhood, in the La Lisa municipality, in Havana. Days before, in a post from La Tijera, it was noted that the attacker “violently broke into the house” and stabbed her in the chest. The attack would have been in front of the victim’s mother.

Although that Facebook post indicated that the aggressor was arrested, Alas Tensas demanded that the authorities make a statement regarding the capture.

Alas Tensas demanded that the authorities rule on the capture

The observatory also asked for support from citizens “to complete the information about this case, especially if there are children who survive Noralis”, whom they remembered on social networks as a “good neighbor and loved by everyone.”

Regarding the feminicide of Liudmila Álvarez Coll, the report indicates that she was murdered by her partner on October 6 in her home, in the La Marina neighborhood, in the Manzanillo municipality, in Granma. In this case, the authorities were also required to provide information about the whereabouts of the aggressor. Alas Tensas indicated that Liudmila leaves behind a daughter, who would have made the complaint on social networks, according to a post prior to the case.

The observatory’s report also reports five attempted feminicides in the country and that they are on the trail of three more possible cases: one in Santiago de Cuba, another in Villa Clara and one more in Camagüey.

With these two new femicides, the list of deaths due to gender violence on the Island stands at 32 – according to the count of 14ymedio–, seven of which, almost a quarter, were recorded only in August.

In 2024, this diary counted 52 murders due to sexist violence based on independent records. According to figures from the Cuban Observatory on Gender Equality, last year a total of 76 gender-related murders were tried in the country, in which the victims were over 15 years old. The agency does not specify the dates the crimes were committed, but it is most likely that they occurred in 2023 and 2024.

Since 2019, the Alas Tensas and Yo Sí Te Creo observatories in Cuba have documented 302 femicides in Cuba

According to independent counts, from 2019 until this Wednesday, the Alas Tensas and Yo Sí Te Creo observatories in Cuba have documented 302 femicides in Cuba – with the two new ones reported – “a figure that represents only an under-recording of gender violence on the Island.”

“In the face of this alarming situation, we continue to demand effective public policies that protect women, as well as the right to freedom of association, assembly and demonstration to organize and fight against this deep-rooted problem of violence against women and girls,” the organizations demanded once again.
