Havana/The Guantánamo Provincial Prosecutor’s Office has imposed provisional detention on two individuals allegedly involved in the murder of Professor Rolando Castelví Riñat, which occurred in Guantánamo on November 25. As usually happens with these cases, the event immediately spread in social networksbut the authorities have not confirmed it until this Wednesday.
According to the official profile “Guantanamo and its Truth”the attack occurred at night, inside the José Marcelino Maceo Grajales Pedagogical School, while the educator was working his shift as a worker guard. This work, a common practice in Cuba, consists of monitoring and protecting state facilities outside of school hours and is assumed in shifts by the staff, responsible for preventing access by people outside the institution.
The attack occurred while the educator was on duty.
During that surveillance, the post indicated, Castelví noticed the presence of several young people who did not belong to the campus. When he asked them to leave, the discussion became violent and one of them attacked him from behind with a knife, causing extremely serious injuries. Although he was immediately transferred to the Saturnino Lora Torres Provincial Hospital, doctors were unable to save his life due to severe internal damage.
The progress of the investigation was possible thanks to the testimony of a witness who witnessed part of the confrontation and allowed the main suspects to be identified. As a result, two young people were arrested and remain under provisional arrest while investigations continue.
The Prosecutor’s Office indicated that, once the investigative phase is concluded, it will exercise public criminal action and request sanctions commensurate with the seriousness of the crime, the circumstances of the event and the individual characteristics of those involved.
The murder of Castelví Riñat has generated deep concern among teachers, students and families, who see this episode as a reflection of the deterioration of citizen security and the increase in violent episodes in different provinces of the country. For many, the case once again highlights the vulnerability of those who work in educational centers and the urgent need to reinforce the protection conditions in these spaces.
