Two Cuban baseball players suspended for life for an escape attempt in Mexico

The Cuban Baseball Federation “suspended for life from all sports activities” the baseball players Alfredo Fadraga and Yosvani Ávalos. They punish them refers the journalist Yordano Carmona, for having left the team that was participating in the U-23 Pan American Championship in Aguascalientes, Mexico.

Fadraga and Ávalos saw their escape attempt frustrated last June, due to the collaboration of the Mexican authorities who located and detained them. The arrest of the young people generated criticism such as that of the director of Amnesty International for the Americas, Erika Guevara, who demanded an explanation from the Secretary of Public Security of the state of Aguascalientes for not providing protection to two Cuban athletes.

For their part, Cuban baseball players Javier Carabeo and Yulián Quintana were also sanctioned. In their case, they will not be able to play for two years on the Island. According to the journalist Frances Romerothe athletes were punished for “an unproven attempt to leave the hotel where they were staying in Aguascalientes (Mexico) during the U-23 World Cup last June.”

The communicator questioned the disciplinary measure that was leaked to him by a source, because the athletes were used until the end of the tournament by manager Eriel Sánchez. “If it was like that, it has to be reported. It doesn’t make any sense that two players who are going to face a sanction continue to play the tournament.”

The U-23 World Cup represented the worst sporting disaster for Cuba. The bleeding of baseball players was a constant, of 24 athletes who traveled to Mexico, only 12 returned. And the Cuban authorities found no other recourse than to blame the United States for encouraging the emigration of their talents.

Romero notes that there is a “discrepancy.” This is because Carabeo’s performance in the contest was outstanding. He was “Cuba’s most outstanding hitter for hitting three home runsthe first time that a player has hit three in a pre-world championship”.

Quintana, on the other hand, was the pitcher who threw the fastest. “He is a pitcher talented”, said the informant based in the US. Among the audience, people who measured with the help of devices, the speed of the player.

While Carabeo and Quintana are punished a year and days after committing indiscipline, Yuddiel González, who did leave the team’s concentration at the Ramada hotel in Aguascalientes, was not punished. This young Avilanian returned to Cuba and last May he took advantage of his stay in Mayabeque to leave the island in a boat.
