Twelve members of Russian diplomatic mission to the UN ordered to leave the United States for March 7, the Russian ambassador to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, reported Monday at a press conference.
When the meeting with the press had just begun, the ambassador asked those present for a minute to respond to a telephone call. “I have just received information that the US authorities 12 diplomats from Russia’s mission to the UN have been declared persona non grata, he said at the end of the call.
The deputy US ambassador to the United Nations, Richard Mills, told a Security Council meeting that the expulsion of these diplomats is due to “activities that do not correspond” to their status.
He did not offer other details about said expulsion or if it is related to the Russian invasion in Ukraine.
Mills, who was speaking at the start of a Security Council meeting devoted to the armed conflict, shortly after the announcement made by the Russian ambassador Nebenzia, demanded that the latter concentrate on the objective of the meeting, which was to address the humanitarian consequences of the invasion.
It is, said Nebenzia at the press conference, a “hostile action” and a “serious violation of the host country” of its commitments within the framework of the rules applicable to foreigners working in the United Nations.
The ambassador did not give details about who was affected by the measure or the reason given by the United States for expelling them. Nor if it was linked to the war in Ukraine.
The Russian mission to the UN has a hundred people, according to a Russian diplomatic source.
