Samba Train
Created by Marquinhos de Oswaldo Cruz, Trem do Samba turns 29 this year. With the initiative, the host seeks to rescue history, in addition to valuing personalities that marked the era such as Candeia, Tia Doca, Monarco and Manacéia. The party is inspired by the train journey that Paulo da Portela and other bambas took at the beginning of the 20th century to escape police repression of the musical genre.
As tradition dictates, the samba artists meet at Central do Brasil, on the Seu Monarco Stage, and leave for the north of the capital on the 6:04 pm train, accompanied by the Velha Guarda from several samba schools in the Marvelous City.
At 20-minute intervals, two more trains continue on the journey, with Rio’s main samba groups playing in their carriages.
Upon arrival in Oswaldo Cruz, the artists perform on three stages in different locations in the neighborhood: Candeia, Tia Doca and Manacéia stages. This year, the celebration of culture and popular manifestation has the participation of traditional Velha Guarda groups such as Mangueira, Império Serrano, Vila Isabel and Salgueiro. The event also hosts names that move the Rio scene such as Moacyr Luz and Samba do Trabalhador, Terreiro de Crioulo, Mauro Diniz and Toninho Gerais, among other highlights.
