The parliamentary initiative is known among congressmen as PL das fake news (fake news). The topic is reported in the Chamber by Deputy Orlando Silva (PCdoB-SP), who defends points such as the accountability of social networking platforms for the dissemination of hate speech against the Democratic State of Law.

This Wednesday morning, the president of the TSE, Minister Alexandre de Moraes, met at the court’s headquarters in Brasília with representatives of the digital platforms Tik Tok, Twitter, Meta (WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram), Telegram, YouTube, Google and Kwai.

According to the TSE, the suggestion for the creation of the joint WG came from Moraes, who defended self-regulation and the participation of platforms in the elaboration of any legislative proposal.

“I have no doubt that, if it is not something built together and, mainly, based on self-regulation of the platforms themselves, the chance of being efficient is very small”, said Moraes during the meeting, as disclosed by the TSE.

Moraes also suggested the expansion of existing control mechanisms to hate speech to combat issues such as pedophilia. He also indicated the need for some degree of accountability on the platforms, in the case of content promoted and monetized by algorithms.

During the meeting, the group of platforms “took the opportunity to inform the minister about the actions of the media to prevent the replication of false news over the internet, the actions of control of the platforms and reaffirm the commitment to building initiatives together with the Electoral Justice” , disclosed the TSE.

Regarding the experience during the elections, Moraes said that the need for greater cooperation had been demonstrated, and that the intense experience of the attacks during the elections until January 8 served as a learning experience.
