Trump will be the first US president convicted and the oldest to take office

The Republican Party candidate for the White House, donald trumpwill set several records in January when he takes office as president for the second timebecoming the oldest person to do so and the first to sit in the Oval Office with a sentence already on his shoulders.

The New York tycoon, who has denounced a “witch hunt” against him in the judicial field, returns to the Presidency with numerous open fronts that, according to the results, have not taken their toll. On one of these fronts he already has a criminal conviction, in particular for 34 charges relating to falsification of business records.

This case investigates the falsification of documents to hide the payment of $130,000 to the former porn actress ‘Stormy Daniels’who he paid not to talk about an alleged extramarital affair shortly before the 2016 elections, the first in which Trump achieved victory.

Trump’s lawyers have sought to delay the sentence, which could be announced this November, while fighting to prove his innocence in other cases such as the one examining the alleged political interference after the 2020 elections. The judges will have to analyze not only the facts themselves but the range of immunity that Trump may enjoy as president.

In the case of payments to ‘Stormy Daniels’, the maximum penalty is four years in prison, although the judge does not necessarily have to reach this limit and could opt for a lesser sentence, such as house arrest, community service or a fine. In that case, a new pulse would open in which the lawyers would predictably appeal to constitutional issues to lengthen the process and delay it even for years.

This is not a federal case, but falls within the state of New York, so Trump would not have the ability to pardon himself once he takes office.

The United States has also not had a re-elected president until now after facing a ‘impeachment’. Trump has even been subjected to two impeachment trials – one of them when he was still in his first term -, although neither of them went ahead thanks to the Republican majority in the Senate.

Older than Biden

Trump is currently 78 years old, the same as the current president, Joe Bidenwas inaugurated in January 2021. In the campaign prior to the 2020 elections, in fact, the tycoon mocked his rival’s age and questioned his ability to take the reins of the country, something that he once again agitated against him. in the months prior to these last elections and before Biden’s withdrawal.

However, it will be Trump who holds the record for the oldest president. While Biden arrived at the White House at the age of 78 years and 61 days, the virtual winner of this Tuesday’s elections will once again open the doors of the Presidential headquarters at the age of 78 years and 221 days.

Trump is even a month older than the former president George W. Bush and he is 15 years older than Barack Obama. The only former tenant of the White House who is older than him is Jimmy Carterwhich last October 1 became a centenary.
