Trump: “We will attack cartels on land; Mexico is governed by them”

The intervention of the United States in Venezuela and the arrest of Nicolás Maduro puts pressure on the administration of Claudia Sheinbaum to intensify the fight against drug cartels and end the link between authorities and criminal organizations.

The “Operation Absolute Resolve”, which led to Maduro’s arrest, intensified the versions that Mexico could be the next target for a military intervention.

For specialists, this is a latent but distant possibility, even with the statements of US officials and the president himself, who assured that “something will have to be done with Mexico.”

From Mexico, President Claudia Sheinbaum has said that she does not see the risk of US intervention and has considered that Trump’s constant threats only respond to one way in which the president communicates.

In the first year of his current term, as part of his fight against drugs, Trump designated eight cartels as terrorist organizations, attacked vessels in the Caribbean that were allegedly transporting drugs (which left more than 100 dead), and recently named fentanyl as a weapon of mass destruction.
