Trump signs decree to reduce US tariffs on Japanese cars to 15%

Trump signs decree to reduce US tariffs on Japanese cars to 15%

The president of the United States, Donald Trumpsigned on Thursday a decree to reduce tariffs to Japanese cars, within the framework of the implementation of a commercial pact negotiated with Tokyo.

Japanese cars will have a 15% tariff instead of current 27.5%, while for many other products it will also be limited to 15%, according to the text of the executive order published by the White House.

This is a victory for Japan after a Tokyo representative traveled to Washington on Thursday to press Trump to sign the document that establishes the changes announced weeks ago.

While both countries had initially presented a commercial pact at the end of July, they seemed to disagree in their details.

When Trump implemented higher tariffs for Japan in early August, as he did with dozens of other economies, the 15% rate joined the existing levels for many other products.

Given this situation, the Japanese tariff sent Ryosei Akazawa declared journalists that he expected Washington to review the norm.

The modifications must be made within seven days of the publication of the standard in the Federal Registry.
