The president of the United States, Donald Trump, said on Friday that he can talk to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva at any time that the Brazilian wants. In an interview with journalists in Washington, he was asked if he would be open to negotiate directly with Lula to review the imposition of 50% trade tariffs on Brazilian products.
“He can talk to me whenever he wants. Let’s see what happens, but I love the people of Brazil,” said Trump.
Again asked about the high tariff applied to products in Brazil, the largest among all business partners, the US president added that “people who are commanding Brazil did the wrong thing.”
This was Trump’s first statement about Brazil since he signed last Wednesday (30), the executive order to impose commercial tariffs.
On the same day, the US government also announced a punitive sanction Against the Supreme Court Minister (STF) Alexandre de Moraes, rapporteur of cases against the attempted coup d’état in Brazil and who has among the defendants former President Jair Bolsonaro.
Still last Wednesday, after the application of tariffs, President Lula issued an official note in which it defends the country’s democracy and sovereignty against the US initiatives against Brazilian economy and justice.
