The US president Donald Trump on Wednesday, to deploy troops in the southern tourist city of New Orleansas part of his offensive against violence in cities governed by the Democratic opposition.
The Republican President has launched a crusade against crime in the main American cities, which are mostly governed by Democrats, and that are those presented by the worst indices of murders, robberies or assaults by armed hand.
So far he has sent Los Angeles to the National Guard and has deployed it in the capital, Washington, where he enjoys wide prerogatives as it is a territory under federal jurisdiction.
Local authorities oppose that deployment, which they consider excessive and a measure of political pressure, while Trump ensures that his goal is to put order in the streets.
Critics affirm that Trump is overreaching their powers by ordering troops to perform tasks, including arrests and records and seizures, which normally correspond to the local police and immigration agents.
“We are weighing a decision: are we going to Chicago or are we going to a place like New Orleans, where we have a great governor, Jeff Landry, who wants us to enter and put order in a very pleasant part of this country that has become … quite hard, quite bad?”, The US president told journalists at the White House.
Trump promised that he could put New Orleans under control “in about two weeks.” Landry, Trump’s ally, responded with enthusiasm in X: “We will accept the help of President @realdonaldtrump!”
Although much of Louisiana is firmly republican, the largest city in the state, New Orleans, is deeply a Democrat, with extreme poverty bags that contribute to its crime rate.
Like other cities indicated by Trump in his offensive and in line with national trends, New Orleans has registered strong declines in homicides and other violent crimes this year.
Republicans, however, say that in many cities these statistics do not collect reality on the ground, since in their opinion numerous violent acts are not correctly reported. “Milorizing the streets of New Orleans is not a solution,” American Democratic Democrat Troy Carter, who represents New Orleans and its surroundings, said in X.
JB Pritzker, the Democratic governor of the state of Illinois, where Chicago is located, said Trump is “producing a political drama to cover up his corruption.” Trump has also proposed to deploy troops on the ground in New York and Baltimore.
