The memorandum accuses China of “exploiting the capital of the United States more and more to develop and modernize its military, intelligence and security devices.”
He asked to resort to the Foreign Investment Committee in the United States (CFIUS) to restrict Chinese investments in key sectors of the country, such as technology, critical infrastructure, medical care and energy.
The CFIUS is a panel that weighs the implications of national security of foreign investments in the United States.
“President Trump is fulfilling his promise to prevent foreign adversaries from taking advantage of the United States,” said the White House.
The memorandum spread after Trump imposed additional customs tariffs of 10% to all products imported from China earlier this month, due to the supposed role of the Asian country in the lethal traffic of fentanyl.
Beijing has rejected the accusation.
On Wednesday, however, the US president suggested that a commercial agreement with China was “possible.”
