President Donald Trump said he will announce on Monday that the United States will impose 25 % tariffs on all imports of steel and aluminum, including those of Canada and Mexico, as well as other import tariffs later in the week.
“Any steel that enters the United States will have a 25 %tariff,” journalists told journalists at the Air Force One while flying from Florida to New Orleans to attend the Super Bowl. When asked about aluminum, he replied that “aluminum also” will be subject to commercial penalties.
Trump also reaffirmed that he would announce “reciprocal tariffs” – “probably on Tuesday or Wednesday” – which means that the United States will impose import tariffs on products in cases where another country has imposed tariffs on US goods.
“If they are charging us 130 % and we don’t charge them anything, it won’t continue,” he told reporters.

Trump’s comments are the last example of his willingness to threaten, and in some cases to impose, import taxes. Tariffs are arriving long before in their presidency that during their previous four years in the White House, when he prioritized tax cuts and deregulation. Trump has alternately said that he sees import taxes as tools to force concessions on issues such as immigration, but also as a source of income to help close the government budget deficit.
The financial markets fell on Friday after Trump said for the first time that reciprocal tariffs would impose. The prices of the actions also fell after a measure of the feeling of the consumer declined on Friday, largely because many respondents cited tariffs as a growing concern. The survey also found that Americans expect inflation to increase in the coming months due to tariffs.
President Trump on Sunday did not offer details about steel and aluminum tariffs, or reciprocal tariffs. Trump had previously threatened with 25 % import taxes over all goods in Canada and Mexico, although he paused for 30 days just a week ago. At the same time, he proceeded to add 10 % tariffs to all imports from China.
However, on Friday he said that he would also delay tariffs on the millions of small packages – often of fast fashion firms such as Temu and Shein – until customs officials can find a way to impose them. Until now, small packages were exempt from tariffs.
Trump’s new statements caused immediate concern of some commercial partners.
The acting South Korean president, Choi Sang-Mok, convened a meeting on Monday with the country’s highest and foreign policy responsible to analyze how the tariffs proposed by Trump to steel and aluminum would affect their industries.
Choi’s office, which also serves as the country’s finance minister, said officials commented on the possible impact and possible Seoul responses, but no concrete details were published. The titles of large South Korean manufacturers of steel, such as Posco and Hyundai Steel, fell into the opening of the market. South Korea sent steel to the United States worth about 4.8 billion dollars between January and November last year, which accounted for 14 % of its global exports of those products in that period.
