Trujillo: Alarm for three cases of tuberculosis in public schools

The alarms have been lit in some public schools in the Liberteña capital. Yesterday, the Deputy Health Deputy of the Provincial Municipality of Trujillo (MPT), Julio Torres Vigo, revealed that three cases of tuberculosis (TB) have been detected in different educational institutions of the city.

The news was then confirmed to this newspaper by the Head of Epidemiology of the Regional Health Management (Geresa) of La Libertad, Ana María Burga Vega, who said, however, that the cases belong to three high school schoolchildren from two schools in Trujillo District.

SCENERY

Speaking to the press at the Edil Palace, Torres said that the information was provided by officials of the Trujillo Health Network, an entity attached to the Geresa, in a recent meeting.

Then, in dialogue with this newspaper, he said that “definitely, this situation has lit the alarms in local authorities”, since it is a disease that is transmitted through air and in these cases, “in spaces such as a classroom where there are twenty or more students”, some of them in a state of vulnerability due to other diseases or poor diet.

“These possible primary contacts can also acquire the disease. What we are talking about is serious. You have to remember that a case of tuberculosis takes six months and if the patient abandons the treatment, it no longer has a cure”added the doctor.

According to the World Health Organization, tuberculosis “is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, a bacterium that almost always affects the lungs.” The same entity considers that closed or poorly ventilated environments – like state schools in the country – are high risk for the transmission of TB.

CHAIN

Ana María Burga Vega, on the other hand, explained that one of the schoolchildren who has positive to TB was infected by a relative of this and what you have to do now is to observe the evolution of adolescents.

“The good thing is that the cases that have been detected require only conventional, regular treatment. We are not talking about resistant tuberculosis, which is definitely good news,” Indian.

Faced with these three cases detected, the official said that actions have been coordinated with the representatives of both schools and the teachers themselves to detect other possible infections and prevent the disease from continuing to spread.

According to Burga Vega, of the three cases detected, two belong to the same classroom and the other to a different hall, from two Trujillo schools. “Last year there was only one case, which indicates that it is a disease that does not have high frequency,” pointed out.

Weeks ago the MPT health sub -management had already initiated a series of activities in Trujillo and Moche schools to avoid tuberculosis cases.
