The Liberal government of the Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeausurvived a third legislative motion of no confidence in two months on Monday, presented by his main conservative rival.
The Trudeau administration with its minority representation was saved by obtaining the support of the New Democratic Party (NDP), a small left-wing faction that was once aligned with the Liberals, to block the motion by 180 votes to 152.
The text of the proposal echoed criticism that NDP leader Jagmeet Singh himself had leveled at Trudeau since breaking their alliance in late August, calling him “too weak, too selfish.”
Neither Singh nor Trudeau – in power since 2015 – were present during the vote.
The Liberals currently have 153 seats compared to the Conservatives’ 119, while the remaining 58 are divided between two parties, including the NDP (25).
