A private truck transporting workers fell today from a bridge in Jiguaní, Granma province, leaving 22 people injured, seven of them seriously.
The accident, which occurred around 11:00 in the morning, took place on the Santa Rita elevated bridge, when the vehicle, coming from Santiago de Cuba and bound for Niquero, lost control due to an alleged failure in the transmission bar, according to reported the Cuban News Agency.
Although preliminary investigations point to a mechanical failure, the condition of the vehicle or possible additional responsibilities have not been detailed.
The seven seriously injured were transferred to the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes hospital in Bayamo, while the others receive care at the Edor de los Reyes and David Moreno polyclinics.
Cited by the ACNDr. Leticia Fernández, director of local Public Health, assured that “so far no deaths have been reported” and that medical resources are guaranteed.
There were no minors or pregnant women among the injured in the vehicle. The truck, hired by self-employed workers to attend festivities in Niquero, did not offer regular transportation service, the note adds.
Another massive accident took place near the end of September, when two buses collide in the Ranchuelo municipality, Villa Clara. In the incident, 49 people were injured, several of them reported seriously and among whom there were minors.
Cuba reports 502 deaths in traffic accidents between January and August
The incident occurred on the highway to Esperanza, two kilometers from the La Esperanza popular council of the Ranchuelo municipality, and involved a Yutong vehicle (plate number 121284), and a Diana bus (027011), as well as a horse cart.
Among the injured were nine children, who were treated at the José Luis Miranda pediatric hospital; Meanwhile, at the Arnaldo Milian Castro hospital, the adults received care, two of them reported to be in serious condition.

Shortly before, the same source had reported two injuries in another accident that occurred on the Bayamo-Holguín highway, involving a private car and a tourist vehicle, whose occupants suffered injuries of varying magnitude, but without danger to life.
Between January and August 2025, Cuba has recorded 502 deaths in traffic accidents, which is equivalent to 80% of the total number of deaths from this cause in the entire previous year and, therefore, points to an increase in mortality on the island’s roads.
According to a report from the National Road Safety Commission released this Tuesday by official media, in the first eight months of this year, 41 more accidents were reported than in the same period of 2024, with a balance of 4,516 injuries.
In comparison, in 2024 as a whole, 7,507 traffic accidents were recorded, 12% less than in 2023, with a total of 638 deaths, according to January data from the National Road Safety Commission.
