Tropical Storm Melissa: Copper increases hydroelectric turbine generation

He Operation Committee of Dams and Reservoirs (Copper) reported that this organization monitors each dam to ensure its proper management in the midst of the complicated climate panorama caused by the Storm Melissa.

He Copper gave a full detail about the conditions of the different reservoirs to which it pays attention and reported that electricity generation has increased by 50 percent.

This was made known after a meeting held this Friday, which was led by the executive director of the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources, (Indrhi), Olmedo Caba Romano and the administrator of the Dominican Hydroelectric Generation Company (Egehid), Rafael Salazar.

After the meeting they took appropriate measures with the volume of water of each dam, in accordance with the protocols that govern them during the cyclonic season, reports a press document from the organization.

Due to the hydroelectric generation generated by the reservoirs, turbine generation has increased to provide energy to the national energy matrix, since the solar energy is unbalanced by the passage of the Storm MelissaSalazar said.

The dams

The head of Indrhi, Olmedo Caba Romanostated that the Monción dam, in Santiago Rodríguez, It has 98% of its capacity, so it is being monitored minute by minute.

“The operations of hydroelectric generation have allowed to have the balanced preyso at this moment they do not represent any danger,” the official said.

“When it reaches its maximum capacity it will make a free pour to the channel of the Yaque del Norte River and, as always, we will announce it to the population through the Operations Center of Emergencies,” he indicated.

About the Sabaneta damlocated in the province of Saint Johnit was reported that it currently has 100.7% of its volume, so they maintain the turbine in order to use the accumulated waters.

Indomet report

Regarding the rain forecasts for the next few hours, they indicated that the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet) predicts that the Nizao River basin, corresponding to the Valdesia damcould receive significant contributions.

As a result, in a timely manner, data will be provided to the Operations Center of Emergencies (COE) for the implementation of measures in the lower part of the basin.

Caba Romero and Salazar made a called set the population to remain attentive to security agencies, highlighting that in some points the soils are saturated and this can cause flooding.

Accumulated water

After 72 hours of rain, Indomet reported that the area with the highest accumulation of water has been the sector The Chiefdoms in the National District, exceeding the 330 millimeters.

While, in Pole, Barahonaa province that is on alert, were registered 231 millimeters of rains.

The committee remains in permanent session due to the passage of the atmospheric phenomenon Melissa and its effects in the country.
