Tropical storm Julia hits El Salvador after crossing Nicaragua

OnCubaNews

The Savior remains attentive to the passage of tropical storm Julia, which left the Pacific on Sunday night Nicaraguan and advances through the south of the country. In its wake, it has left associated intense rains and landslides, with a balance of almost thirty deaths, adding those reported from Venezuela and Honduras.

According to a report from Latin Press (PL), President Nayib Bukele reported through his official Facebook account that Salvadoran government institutions, through first response teams, were prepared for the phenomenon to enter the national territory.

The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Marn) warned about the effects of the storm that since last night and today, Monday, has dropped threatening rainfall and strong winds over the entire Salvadoran territory.

The Marn foresees that in the next 24 hours there will be infrastructure losses, material and human damage, as well as a prolonged interruption of mobility and services, for which it called on citizens to prepare for a possible emergency, the report points out.

According to forecasts, Julia arrived in the Pacific in the afternoon-night hours after leaving a trail of destruction and flooding in Nicaragua, where some 1,500 families were affected and more than 2,000 damaged homes.

Salvadoran authorities said that the system has been influencing the country since Sunday night and early Monday morning with heavy rains and storms, accompanied by gusts of wind of up to 70 kilometers per hour during the night and early morning of Monday.

Julia is expected to continue its movement parallel to the Pacific coast of El Salvador and Guatemala this Monday with winds that could reach 95 kilometers per hour and more, according to forecasts.

Julia has also indirectly impacted territories such as Costa Rica, where at least 300 people had to be transferred to one of the 10 temporary shelters, as confirmed by Jorge Rovira, an official from the National Emergency Commission (CNE), quoted by PL.

“Specifically in our country, it really did generate very strong storm conditions, where the South Pacific is the one that has registered the highest amount of rainfall, 260 millimeters have been registered in Golfito and surroundings and in everything that is south-south. and South Pacific we have registered between 200 and 280 millimeters”, he specified.

Venezuela: 22 dead and more than 50 missing due to heavy rains

In Venezuela, a landslide due to intense rains already adds up to 25 deaths in the town of Las Tejerías, Santos Michelena municipality, Aragua state. In Honduras, a man and a child drowned, while a 22-year-old woman perished on Sunday dragged down a ravine. Another was missing.

Heavy rains and floods have been recorded, mainly in the north of the country, and, as in El Salvador, hundreds of people were affected. The authorities asked the inhabitants of several municipalities in northern Honduras to evacuate preventively due to the flooding of mighty rivers that cross the area.
