Tropical depression forms in the Atlantic that could affect eastern Cuba

The Institute of Meteorology (Insmet) of Cuba reported this Wednesday on the formation of the seventh Tropical depression of the current cyclone season.

The organism currently travels over the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and has the possibility of affecting the east of the Island in the coming days.

According to him Tropical Cyclone Warning Number 1 issued by the institution, in the morning hours the low pressure center that was embedded in the axis of a tropical wave located to the east of the Lesser Antilles Arc, continued to gain organization and became a tropical depression.

The report indicates that at 11:00 am the center of this system was located at 16.6 degrees North latitude and 49.6 degrees West longitude, a position that placed it about 1,300 kilometers east of the northern group of the Lesser Antilles Arc.

At that time, the atmospheric phenomenon presented maximum sustained winds of 55 km/h, with higher gusts and a central pressure of 1009 hectoPascal, the information highlights.

According to the Ismet Forecast Center, the current depression will continue to move westward at a speed of 22 km/h for the next 12 to 24 hours, gradually gaining more organization and intensity.

Insmet specialists announced last May that an active cyclonic season (from November 1 to 30) in the Atlantic was expected for this year, with up to nine potential hurricanes.

Cuban Institute of Meteorology forecasts an active cyclonic season

According to those forecasts, up to 17 cyclones tropical, and of the expected hurricanes, one could affect Cuba, with an 85% probability. A dozen cyclones, according to experts, would develop in the oceanic area of ​​the Atlantic, three in the Caribbean Sea and two in the Gulf of Mexico.

The previous hurricane season, corresponding to 2021, officially closed as the third busiest in historyonly surpassed by those of the years 2005 and 2020, according to data compiled by Insmet.

In that period of time, the Island was directly affected by the storms tropical Elsa and Fred, and by Hurricane Ida. Meanwhile, Grace had an indirect impact, as a tropical storm and hurricane.

During the past season, 21 tropical cyclones were named, of which seven were hurricanes (four of great intensity: Grace, Ida, Larry and Sam). None reached category 5 and the most intense was Sam, with winds of 250 km/h.
