Trophies seized from Vampeta, world champion with Brazil, for a debt

Trophies seized from Vampeta, world champion with Brazil, for a debt

A civil judge from the state of Sao Paulo authorized the seizure of the medals, trophies and other assets of former soccer player Marcos André Batista Santos.vampette‘, champion with Brazil of the 2002 World Cup, for a debt of about 300,000 reais (about 54,110 euros) with his daughters’ school.

Judge Renata Bittencourt Couto da Costa gave him a deadline until April 29 for the ex-volante of clubs like Corinthians to deliver a list of assets that can be seized, in order to determine which will be auctioned to cover the debt, judicial sources reported this Tuesday.

In the same ruling, the judge authorized the seizure and possible auction of the soccer player’s trophies, electrical appliances, and even clothing, including the medals he received as world champion, and set a fine if Vampeta does not do so.

The decision, issued on April 19, is of last resort, so Vampeta can no longer file appeals against the embargoes.

The plaintiff was the Castanheiras School, an educational center in Santana de Parnaíba, a city in the metropolitan region of Sao Paulo, which collects eight monthly payments from the former soccer player’s daughters that were not paid in 2013.

The school ensures that the debt amounts to 215,000 reais (about 38,778 euros) with interest and fines in values of the time, which were updated by the judge. The educational center itself presented to the Court a list of trophies won by the Corinthians idol and that can be seized.

The former footballer blames his ex-wife

The former soccer player claimed in his defense that the person responsible for the contract with the school was his ex-wife, who would be responsible for making the payments with the alimony that he transferred to her. “The parents are obliged, jointly, to satisfy certain obligations of the relatives,” the judge argued when rejecting the defendant’s arguments.

Roberta Soares, the ex-soccer player’s ex-wife, admitted that she did not pay the school fees because Vampeta was late in paying alimony.

The seizure of the assets was decided after the same court authorized the blocking of the ex-soccer player’s bank accounts, in which only 3,385 reais (about 610 euros) were retained, insufficient to pay the debt.

In July 2022, also convicted of non-payment of a debt, the former flyer offered to sell a residence worth about 650,000 reais (about 117,238 euros).

An excellent record with Corinthians

Vampeta, who was part of the Brazilian team that won the 2002 World Cup, was the Brazilian champion with Corinthians in 1998 and 1999, as well as the Club World Cup champion with the same São Paulo team in 2000.

In addition to Corinthians, Vampeta also played for Brazilian clubs Vitória, Fluminense, Flamengo and Brasiliense, as well as for PSV Eindhoven (Netherlands), Paris Saint-Germain (France) and had a brief stint at Inter (Italy).
