Triple player Lazaro Martínez will jump at the initial stop of the Diamond League

The Cuban triple shooter Lazaro Martinez appears among those registered for the athletic rally in Doha, in Qatar, which next Friday will mark the start of the diamond league 2023.

The presence of the current indoor world champion was confirmed by the Cuban Federation of Athletics. According to the event’s website, the three medalists from the past Eugene 2022 world competition will be present there, indicates a note published by the sports portal Hit.

The Cuban Olympic champion Peter Paul Pichardo, who is competing for the Portuguese federation, Huges Fabrice Zango from Burkinabe and Yaming Zhu from China were the ones who took the podium in the most recent universal event, in that order. They will be joined by other stars in the specialty such as two-time US Olympic champion Christian Taylor, the report added.

Martínez will arrive at the rally with an outdoor personal best of 17.50 meters, registered almost at the end of the previous season, at the Diamante de Lausanne stop. In that same campaign he set a 17.64 meters that earned him the universal indoor crown in Belgrade.

The Cuban starred in good results in the last edition of the prestigious athletic circuit by achieving victories in the phase held in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he reached second place with 17.50 meters; and in Brussels, Belgium, with 17.49 meters.

These performances prompted him to advance to the final of the contest, held in Zurich, where he could barely reach 16.75 meters in his third attempt, to be in the sixth and last seat of that competition.

The podium was then occupied by a trio of Cubans who no longer represent the island’s federation. The best of all was Andy Díaz, based in Italy, with an impressive mark of 17.70 meters. Behind were Pichardo (17.63) and the promising youngster Jordan Díaz (17.60), already a Spanish national.

Cuban triple jumpers sweep the final of the Athletics Diamond League

Organizers of the Doha rally announced the presence of 15 reigning Olympic and world champions, including host high jumper Mutaz Essa Barshim, a local idol.

In the 1,500 meters for women, the Kenyan Olympic and world queen Faith Kipyegon will compete; In the women’s hectometre there will be the world champion of the 200 meters, the Jamaican Shericka Jackson, and in the same distance for men there will be an intense fight between the Canadian André de Grase, Olympic champion of the 200 meters, and the Americans Fred Kerley and Michael Norman, world champions in 100 and 400, respectively.

Other stars announced for the Qatari event are Indian Neeraj Chopra, Olympic javelin champion, and Moroccan Soufiane El Bakkali, Olympic and world king of the 3,000-meter steeplechase, who will compete in the 3,000-meter hurdle that day.

Doha will open the calendar of the most important annual track and field circuit, which will continue with stops in Rabat (May 28), Rome (June 2), Paris (June 9) and Oslo (June 15).
