Tribute to Ástor Piazzolla is being prepared in Cuba

According to the station Radio Encyclopedia, Helson Hernández is preparing a tribute to Argentine musician Ástor Piazzolla. It will take place in the Minor Basilica of San Francisco de Asís, in Old Havana, on September 14.

The tribute will include two important figures of Buenos Aires lyrical art: the soprano Lola Barrios and the pianist Leandro Pitu, together with the Cuban singers Anaís Abreu, Gretel Cazón, Anabel López, Pilar Pousada and the actor Jorge Luis de Cabo.

The invited Argentines will present the album Cuba from the South in two concerts that will take place at the National Museum of Fine Arts and at the Sauto Theater in Matanzas.

In 2005, Hernández premiered in Cuba the opera Maria from Buenos Airesa work by Piazzolla performed by vocalists from the National Lyric Theater.

Ástor Piazolla (1922-1992) was an Argentine bandoneonist and composer considered one of the most important musicians of the 20th century and one of the most important tango composers in the world. He revolutionized traditional tango with a new style called nuevo tango or avant-garde tango, incorporating elements of jazz and classical music.

Born in Mar del Plata, from a very young age he grew up in the metropolis of New York, where his father gave him a bandoneon that he began to play at a very early age. When he began to make innovations in tango in terms of rhythm, timbre and harmony, he was heavily criticized by the tango members of the old guard.
