Tremor in Ica: IGP reported a 5.1 magnitude earthquake in Marcona

An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 was recorded this Saturday, December 21 in Marcona, in the Ica region, according to the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP).

According to the official report, The epicenter of the earthquake was located 13 kilometers northeast of Marcona, in Nazca (Ica).

In addition, the earthquake had a depth of 57 kilometers, being perceived with an intensity IV in the Marcona district.

So far, Civil Defense authorities have not reported any possible personal or material damage caused by the earthquake in Chosica.

The Emergency Early Warning Messaging System (SISMATE) seeks to alert citizens about a threat of natural disasters, such as earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides, intense rains or the activation of volcanoes. They clarify that it was not created to warn about tremors or earthquakes.

For his part, Hernando Tavera, executive president of the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP), told Andina that “Sismate is an information system; It is not a warning system. That’s the important thing to consider.”.
