The Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP), in conjunction with the Secretary of Energydenied that the price of gasoline will increase next year due to the update of the quota Special Tax on Production and Services (IEPS).
The agency, in charge of Edgar Amador Zamoraclarified that the update contemplated for inflation starting in 2026 does not affect the strategy to stabilize the fuel price which began to be implemented last March.
He recalled that the Strategy to Stabilize the Gasoline Price It was a voluntary pact with gas station businessmen to keep the price of regular gasoline below 24 pesos per liter.
“The update of the IEPS by inflation applicable to said fuel, as of January 1, will not affect the Strategy in any of the elements, nor will it translate into increases in the final cost to the consumer,” explained the SHCP.
In recent days it was published, in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF), the update of the IEPS quotas for gasoline, with which the tax charged to the Magna gasoline will go from 6.45 to 6.70 pesos per liter.
Meanwhile, the IEPS charged in the Premium gasoline will increase from 5.45 to 5.65 pesos per liter, while in the case of diesel will go from 7.09 to 7.36 pesos per liter.
For this year, it is expected that the amount collected by the IEPS on gasoline will reach 473,279 million pesos, which represents more than half of what is expected to be collected by all the IEPS that are charged on other products and services, such as gambling games, cigars, sugary drinksamong others.
In fact, starting next year, other updates that occur are in the case of sugary drinks, such as soft drinks and juices, as well as tobacco.
In addition, the IEPS will begin to be charged on drinks “light” and “zero“, although at a lower rate than sugary drinks.
Another of the modifications that had been approved for the following year was the IEPS of 8% to video games that they were considered “violent”; However, a few days ago the president Claudia Sheinbaum announced that it would not be applied since there are no clear criteria regarding which video games are considered violent.
“It is very difficult to distinguish between a video game that has violence and one that does not. So, how are you going to impose a tax on it? In other words, who is going to determine that circumstance? So, we made the decision not to charge the tax and rather, to campaign for young people and adolescents, about where these types of games can take you,” he said in his morning conference.
