MADRID, Spain.- Of a total of 236 buses, the province of Ciego de Ávila is only using 90, a figure that is not expected to increase, informed the director of the Provincial Transport Company, Manuel Eduardo Marín Torres.

The only thing that the entity can do is “try to sustain it and stop the departure of other buses from service,” said the headline, quoted by the local media. Invasive.

In addition, he explained that maintaining the coefficient of technical availability above 35 percent “is a daunting task”, since the Ministry of Transportation does not provide the resources, but rather they must be obtained from MSMEs.

During 2022, the buses of the public service of Ciego de Ávila transported 7 million 700 thousand passengers, according to the statistics of the Provincial Transport Company, a figure that represents only a third of the plan foreseen for the recently ended year (21 million 937 thousand 000 ).

The territory went from moving some 35 million people annually to these seven, and the fifth reduction speaks of unmet mobility needs and weakened business performance, he adds.

By 2023, sufficient transportation will not be reached, the headline acknowledged. Just as he indicated that his company collides with two serious problems: the aforementioned technical availability and the scarcity of fuel.

“All the numbers noted,” adds Marín Torres, “are confirmation of the deterioration of the sector’s indicators in the last decade.”

In the middle of last year, the authorities of the sector they said that the country’s capital was going through the worst crisis in public transport services in the last decade. On that date, the Havana Provincial Transportation Company, the main operator, had only 442 buses in operation that transported more than 580,000 people daily, a figure that is far from the 780 buses scheduled four years ago.
