Romário and Bebeto, the legendary striker with whom the Brazilian team won the 1994 World Cup in the United States, have made their distance clear with a crossover of accusations originating in politics and in which they have been called “traitor”, “selfish” and “sclerotic”.
The first to open fire was the former Barcelona and Valencia player, who on Monday acknowledged, in an interview with the ‘Cheguei’ podcast, that Bebeto was his biggest partner, but that “he is no longer”.

The current senator pointed out that he did not fight with his ex-partner in the ‘canarinha’, “he only” betrayed him, “nothing more”. “Unfortunately it is so,” he sentenced.
Romario did not explain the reasons for this cooling off, but the Brazilian press speculates that the origin is the last electoral campaign, when Romário defended the far-right Jair Bolsonaro and was re-elected senator, and Bebeto supported the progressive Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvaalthough he did not get a seat in the Chamber of Deputies.
Bebeto, who also entered politics and was a regional deputy for Rio de Janeiro for three terms consecutive, he responded this Tuesday to the criticism of the ‘Baixinho’ with some incendiary statements to the UOL portal in which he described him as “old” and “selfish”.

“Who is he to call me a traitor? Romario is getting old and I think he’s getting sclerotized, saying a lot of nonsense. I have a full career in football and politics, I have never been involved in controversy. I can’t say the same about him, he’s selfish, he always thought of himself,” said the former Sevilla and Deportivo La Coruña player.
Bebeto explained that, in reality, it was Romário who betrayed him by changing political parties without notifying him.

“I did not betray anyone. Politics is done in a group and Romário always thought only of him,” he insisted.
And he still complained that Romário maintains that he won the 1994 World Cup “alone”. “Nobody does anything alone. Soccer and politics are done collectively and Romário is an individualist,” Bebeto said.
