Tragedy on the National Highway: two dead and 18 injured

The vehicle, a Yutong that was traveling from Guantánamo to Havana, lost control shortly after two in the morning.

MIAMI.-A serious traffic accident on the National Highway left two dead and 18 injured in the early hours of this Friday, when a bus from the Transtur company left the road at kilometer 183, near the Las Cajas settlement, in Aguada de Pasajeros, province of Cienfuegos.

The vehicle, a Yutong that was traveling from Guantánamo to Havana, lost control shortly after two in the morning. The information was confirmed by Armando Carranza Valladaresfirst secretary of the Communist Party in Cienfuegos, who explained that the authorities immediately activated the care and rescue mechanisms. According to him, the medical teams assisted the injured at the scene and later transferred them to different health facilities in the province. One of the injured is reported to be seriously injured.

This incident adds to a series of massive accidents recorded in recent weeks on Cuban roads. Although the specific causes of the incident have not yet been detailed, the repetition of similar events has once again put the deterioration of road infrastructure, the overload of drivers and the poor technical conditions of state transportation at the center of the debate.

Other recent incidents illustrate the precariousness of the situation. At the end of October, at kilometer 285 of the same highway, a truck was about to fall off a bridge after one of its front tires burst. The incident caused no casualties, but left significant material damage. In September, two accidents that occurred near the town of Santa Elena, in Santiago de Cuba, caused multiple injuries and severe traffic chaos. That same month, another crash in Paradero de Camarones claimed the lives of the official Diosmiley Llerena Suárez and the driver who accompanied her.

Official statistics confirm that traffic accidents continue to be one of the main causes of death in the country. Only between January and August of this year, 502 deaths were recorded, a figure that already represents 80% of the total reported in 2024. That year closed with 634 fatalities and more than 6,600 injuries, a significant increase compared to the previous period despite the fact that the total number of accidents decreased slightly.

The National Road Safety Commission attributes the majority of accidents to human failure: lack of attention while driving, speeding, violation of the right of way and alcohol consumption. Added to these variables is the progressive deterioration of the country’s roads, an element that specialists and citizens point out as a determining factor in the growing danger of the Cuban road network.
