Traffic accidents have left more than two thousand deaths

Los accidentes de tránsito siguen siendo un problema.

SANTO DOMINGO.-According to data provided by the director of Ney Arias Lora, Julio Landrón, this year more than 2,000 people have died due to traffic accidents, a figure that keeps the health system on alert.

However, he highlighted that the hospital registers a mortality rate of less than 2%, which means that more than 98% of patients who arrive alive manage to survive, thanks to the medical equipment, medications and technology available.

Landrón reiterated that care is guaranteed whether or not they have medical insurance, including surgeries, medications and all procedures necessary to save lives.

The specialist insisted on the importance of using seat belts, pointing out that it reduces thoracoabdominal trauma in vehicle accidents by more than 89%.

Likewise, he emphasized that the use of protective helmets by motorcyclists reduces the risk of suffering severe head trauma by more than 80%, one of the main causes of death in road accidents.

“Craniocerebral trauma and vertebro-spinal injuries continue to lead mortality from traffic accidents,” he warned. Dr. Landrón reported that, according to hospital statistics, this year there has been a decrease of more than 15% in traffic accidents and severe traumas, which he attributed, among other factors, to the entry into operation of new trauma hospitals in Azua and Higüey, which strengthen the public trauma care network.

However, he acknowledged that there is still a need for more ICU beds in the country, both for accident victims
as for patients with cerebrovascular accidents (CVA).

He reiterated the hospital’s commitment to the “A Challenge for Life” campaign, which for five years has promoted the responsibility of drivers, motorcyclists and pedestrians.

He called to respect traffic signs, correctly use pedestrian crossings or “zebra” lines,
Check vehicles before traveling and drive carefully.

On the occasion of the Christmas Eve and Christmas festivities, dates in which traffic accidents historically increase in the country, he urged the population to act with restraint, responsibility and adherence to traffic rules to preserve lives. He stated that “we transmit
that message of guarantee and prevention, ensuring that, in case of any eventuality, we are prepared.”
