Havana Cuba. – In recent days the news about traffic accidents, some massive, are among the topics most commented on by the population. Information is published practically every day about an accident, almost all with fatalities and a large number of injured, without specifying the magnitude of the injuries, which can range from a simple contusion to a head trauma.
According to official sources, between January and October 2022, 8,187 traffic accidents occurred, for a total of 566 deaths and 6,175 injuries. The statistics revealed that every two accidents there was at least one fatality, and the newspaper workers He pointed out that among the main causes are the lack of attention to the control of vehicles and the violation of the right of way by drivers.
The serious problems of road infrastructure, the age of the car park and the permissiveness of the police ―bribes through― towards drivers who have accumulated several infractions also have an influence.
The year 2022 was particularly prolific in terms of traffic accidents, surpassing the records of the three previous years. Only in the last week of December and the first three days of January, four accidents have been reported in the cities of killings, Guantanamo, Pinewood of the river Y Havanawith a joint balance of at least 11 deaths and numerous injuries, some in critical condition.
A little earlier, on December 22, there was a crash at the intersection of L streets and Malecón, where a woman lost her life; while on December 14, in Cabaiguán, province of Sancti Spíritus, the collision between a jeep and a Moscovich killed three people and injured six others.
These events have become more frequent and lethal in a critical context for Cuba, marked by the loss of the working-age population. Added to mass migration are other factors that deprive the country of essential human resources for economic advancement and population replacement.
Although data on the age of those killed in these traffic accidents have not been published, it is very likely that the majority are under 50 years of age; that is to say, citizens of working age who right now should be the most precious treasure of an aging country and increasingly backward in its development indexes.
