Traffic accidents

Education and oversight are key words when it comes to success in this type of initiatives.

The CAMCEL Medical Cooperative will collaborate with an active advertising campaign together with the Municipality of Cerro Largo, also promoting workshops for young people with the aim of reducing the number of traffic accidents.

Education and oversight are considered key concepts when it comes to success in this type of initiatives.

He Dr. Norberto Borba considered that the Points Driving License or Permit is a tool “formidable” as long as it is accompanied by the corresponding controls.

“Traffic accidents are already an endemic problem in Uruguay. We had a period in crescendo, then when back in the year 2008 to 2012 UNASEV was set up in order to promote some national policies trying to coordinate actions with the different institutions, a decline was achieved that lasted until 2016 or 2017, in the pandemic it was the lowest point because mobility was restricted, and then it slowly stagnated. in some 434 deaths that it left last year, for example, and some 28,000 injuries” illustrated the Doctor who has worked for a long time on the subject.

“The number of injuries has grown gradually year after year because there are more and more vehicles, there are more and more people circulating, and the size of the road is the same” held.

INSPECTION, EDUCATION AND ACCORDING RULES

“This is solved in three ways: by first monitoring to have short-term results, educating that it is long-term, and accompanying regulations” he synthesized. “There are three important legs that would achieve a reduction in the numbers at a certain time” he added.

Dr. Borba said that if immediate results are sought, the only way is through inspection. “In other departments, Montevideo, for example, we all behave well, we drive at 60 kilometers for now, with our seat belts on and the lights on. In the society we live in where speed, freedom and a lot of other things are valued, we have a double discourse, in Melo we behave in one way and in Montevideo we behave in another and yes in Melo they monitor us we complain and in Montevideo we don’t say anything, we “we remain still” he stated.

“It is a problem that must be addressed. The problem is not the desire to collect or the desire to inspect for the mere fact of inspecting, it is so that people do not get hurt” he remarked.

THE MOSTLY ACTIVE POPULATION

It continues to be the age group between 15 and 34 years that registers the most deaths due to road accidents. This is the most actively working group, which is extremely worrying in an aging country where there are few births. “If young people are still dying from totally avoidable causes, we have a serious structural problem” warned Dr. Norberto Borba.

He proposed directing steps towards a culture of road safety to try to change this harsh reality in a few years. “We have been fighting it for a long time and although the results have improved, not at the speed we want” he admitted.

“From CAMCEL, where we already received the injured person, the only way we have to collaborate in this is to disseminate information, promote health, promote workshops and generate talks” said.

FINDING THE BEST WAY TO REACH YOUNG PEOPLE

He considered that greater dissemination of the different actions that are being carried out is necessary. “In fact, the Municipality is already coordinating with CAMCEL and the Hospital to promote workshops” stood out.

We must also try to reach young people through the way they communicate today. “We cannot go and communicate from our way of seeing and thinking because the gurises communicate in a different way. They are from the culture of the millennials, the centennials and the generation Z. We are not going to get them to sit down and read a book like we did, they use tutorials and they use YouTube. It is another culture that I am not saying is right or wrong, it is different, therefore, we have to communicate differently. We cannot go and talk to them like in the Century XX to someone from the 21st century. We have to learn how to communicate with the little ones. That is the big key: if we want to have an impact, we have to speak the same language first and then see how we reflect on the problem together, how we look for a solution together with the problem, but if we do not speak the same language we are toast.” said Norberto Borba during the live interview of THE PROFESSIONAL Radio.
