AREQUIPA, Peru – A traffic accident that occurred in the early hours of this Sunday left five dead and one seriously injured in the town of Castillito, municipality of Mayaría, province of Holguín.
Preliminary investigations by the Ministry of the Interior, cited by digital creator Emilio Rodríguez Pupo on Facebook, highlight that the events occurred after 1:00 AM, when a vehicle rented to tourists was traveling with six people from Holguín to Moa.
“Everything indicates that when passing through the Castillito bridge the driver lost control and the car hit a large metal pipe,” the publication states.
Among the deceased reported from the incident are three residents of the United States: Yancarlos Jiménez Carmenate, a 12-year-old boy; Daniuska Carmenate Galván, 43 years old; Adriel Jiménez Pelegrín, 37 years old.
Likewise, Rachel Pelegrín González, 77 years old, living in Las Coloradas, municipality of Moa, died at the scene; and Yaddelis Pérez Osorio, 37 years old, residing in Las Coloradas, municipality of Moa.
Yannelis Pérez Osorio, 33 years old, is being monitored in serious condition with multiple trauma, and was transferred to hospitals in Holguín, according to Yunelvis Rodríguez Estrada, head of the nursing area at the Mayarí Hospital.
According to official data, the Cuban authorities reported that in 2024 there were 634 deaths due to traffic accidents on the Island, a figure slightly lower than that recorded the previous year. However, the number of people injured in accidents increased.
According to the meeting of the National Road Safety Commission, in which the Vice Prime Minister Jorge Luis Tapia Fonseca and the Minister of Transportation Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila participated, in 2024 there were 7,507 accidents, which represents 12% less than the confirmed last year.
However, those injured in the recently concluded year were 6,613, higher than the 5,938 in 2023.
