Trade grew in the country

On the coast it fell by 7%, today the Chamber of Commerce will announce the results of the economic activity survey

Today, May 23, the Chamber of Commerce will announce the results of the economic activity survey and in dialogue with meeting point (Universal radio), its president, Julio César Lestido, announced that, although trade grew in general in the country, in the coastal departments there was a drop of around 7%.

As explained by Lestido, for the survey the country was divided by zones and items, which made it possible to survey some 540 companies and it was found that the situation is “very uneven.” “In the coastal region, the fall is very important, but in the general balance I prefer to keep half the glass half full and not half the glass empty,” he said.

Asked about the exchange situation with Argentina, the president of the Chamber indicated that the situation is “complex and they do not see a solution on the short-term horizon.” He added that the measures taken by the Government are the ones that can be taken and deepening measures such as zero kilo are difficult to apply and control. “All the measures work, but you have to see how effective they are,” he remarked.

Lestido stated that another of the problems that the Chamber has been observing is the entry of contraband merchandise, and explained that, although they monitor the situation in conjunction with Customs and have been doing a good job, the borders “are very wide” and our country “is very expensive”.

Asked about the problem of the availability of bottled water, generated as a result of the drought and the modification of sodium levels in drinking water, Lestido said that in view of the increase in consumption, the behavior of the market is “normal”. The idea, according to the chief, is to be able to maintain prices and from CAMBADU (Centro de Almaceneros Minoristas, Baristas, Autoservicistas y Afines del Uruguay) they are working on that. “From the Chamber we do not have any planned action,” he said.
