Trade Agreements Increase DR Imports

During the months of January and August 2022, the imports who entered the country under the trade agreements they amounted to 2,375.62 million dollars, showing a growth of 25.20% in relation to the same period of 2021.

The data is contained in the Commerce Magazine, published by the General Directorate of Customs (DGA), where it explains that, of this universe of imports, 70.07% was through the DR-Cafta Free Trade Agreement; 23.49% through the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), 5.38% through the Central American FTA agreement, 0.71% through the Caricom FTA, 0.33% through the Cariforum-United Kingdom EPA, and 0.01% through the Partial Scope Agreement with Panama (Aapp).

Between January-August of this year, goods worth 1,664.66 million dollars were imported through the DR-Cafta, for an absolute variation of 306.63 million dollars compared to the same period in 2021, and a growth of 22.58%.

According to the DGA, the most imported item within the DR-Cafta agreement was that corresponding to passenger cars and other motor vehicles (20.75%); for the EPA that corresponding to ceramic plates and tiles (10.89%); for the Central American FTA: water, including mineral and carbonated water (14.94%); for Caricom: cereal-based products (39.64%); and finally the AAE: undenatured ethyl alcohol with an alcoholic strength <80% (95.33%).

The DR-Cafta countries that issue products to the Dominican Republic are the United States, Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Puerto Rico and Nicaragua.

In the case of the EPA agreement, ceramic products, cheese and cottage cheese are introduced into the country; passenger cars and other motor vehicles; malt extract; wine from fresh grapes, among others.

The top 10 of the countries that are part of the EPA is headed by Spain, followed by Germany, Italy, France, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Portugal, Sweden and Poland.

With the Central American FTA, products such as water, including mineral water and carbonated water, are imported; oral or dental hygiene preparations; jelly and jams; washing and cleaning preparations; and containers for the transport or packaging of glass, among others. Guatemala, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua belong to this treaty.

Likewise, through the Cariforo-United Kingdom EPA agreement, a large quantity of beverages, alcoholic liquids, are brought into the country; and fluids for hydraulic brakes, among others. With the Caricom, products based on cereals, labels of all kinds, are imported into the Dominican Republic; plastic and its manufactures; toilet paper; and insulated conductors for electricity, among others.
