Tractors in exchange for rum: regime receives first batch from Belarus

AREQUIPA, Peru – The 2023 agreement between Havana and Minsk is beginning to bear fruit, at least for the Cuban regime, which received the first batch of parts and pieces of Belarusian tractors that will be assembled on the island.

The Bobruisk Tractor Parts and Assembly Plant (BZDiA) in Belarus was responsible for producing the batch, according to a report from the company’s press center, quoted by media from that country.

“About 12 unassembled BELARUS-321M tractors became a test batch for the plant, on the basis of which it is planned to create an assembly production of BELARUS tractors with a capacity of 25-35 horsepower in Cuba,” the note says.

During 2023 and 2024, BZDiA notes, several state officials of the Castro regime visited the production plant, an entity created in August 1945 when construction of the Bobruisk Machine and Tractor Workshop began.

Today the company produces BELARUS tractors models 311, 320, 422 and 622, machinery and accessories, as well as spare parts and disk wheels.

Roman Golovchenko, Prime Minister of Belarus, visited the island last July. On that occasion, the diplomat announced the resumption of the assembly of tractors from that country in Cuba, an action that Havana would pay for with Cuban rum, in the absence of foreign currency.

In recent years, Cuba has been strengthening its ties with Belarus, once part of the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). Especially in recent months, the governments of both countries have held high-level exchanges on military matters.

Cooperation has also been highlighted in the scientific fieldsince the therapeutic vaccine Cimavax against lung cancer, developed by the state-owned Center for Molecular Immunology of Cuba, has obtained registration for its application in Belarus.

In this regard, the Ministry of Health of the Slavic country, through its Center for Expertise and Testing in Health Care, granted the registration of the Cuban vaccine Cimavax.

This record, explains Santiago Pérez, Cuban ambassador in Minsk, shows the progress of the bilateral relationsspecifically in the economic-commercial area that would allow an increase in exports to Cuba.
