The commander of the Anzoátegui state fire department indicated that the presence of these toxic gases originated from a coke and sulfur fire in the José Antonio Anzoátegui petrochemical complex, which created an “atmosphere of sulfur dioxide.”
The presence of toxic gases in the environment caused respiratory conditions on Thursday, November 6, in some populations in the state of Anzoátegui, specifically in the Caigua and El Pilar parishes of the Simón Bolívar municipality (Barcelona).
The Anzoátegui Integrated Risk Management System detailed that at least 66 people were treated in health centers during the contingency. In addition, an “organized eviction” of 210 people – including adults and minors – was carried out from critical areas.
41 people received pre-hospital care for respiratory difficulties at the El Pilar CDI. Of them, 38 were under observation and three were urgently transferred to another medical center by Civil Protection. “The teams also assisted 25 people with respiratory symptoms in Caigua, who were hospitalized.”
Jesús Varela, commander of the Anzoátegui state fire department, indicated that the presence of these toxic gases originated from a coke and sulfur fire in the José Antonio Anzoátegui petrochemical complex, which created an “atmosphere of sulfur dioxide.”
“We sent different ambulances through the State governorate, as well as some buses to carry out the evacuation of some people,” added the official.
Varela indicated that one death was recorded, but assured that it was not due to respiratory conditions. «A lady suffered a heart attack, apparently she had a fall. “It is being investigated, the transfer was made, but he died.”
The head of the fire department indicated that constant monitoring is being carried out to control the situation.
