Torch March amid tensions with the US and blackouts throughout the island

The Cuban Government held the traditional Torch March this Tuesday, on the eve of the 173rd anniversary of the birth of the National Hero, Jose Martiin an event marked by a speech of reaffirmation and unity.

The traditional mobilization was carried out this time in a different scenario, marked by growing tensions with the US after the capture of Nicolás Maduro, added to the prolonged blackouts throughout the country that have been repeated in recent years.

As reviewed EFEthe march It began on the steps of the University of Havana and traveled just over a kilometer to the Fragua Martiana, a monument that commemorates the writer and independence leader.

The mobilization was officially called by the University Student Federation (FEU), although it once again became a platform for the Government to demonstrate the power of convening at a time of high political pressure.

Díaz-Canel led the march along with other senior officials of the Government and the Communist Party of Cuba, according to the coverage broadcast by the state press.

This year’s edition was also dedicated to former President Fidel Castro, on the occasion of the centenary of his birth.

The Torch March is part of the historical calendar of the Cuban Revolution. On January 27, 1953, the tour was carried out for the first timealso organized by the FEU and with the participation of Fidel Castro, on the eve of the centenary of Martí’s birth.

“Let us have the teaching profession and Cuba will be ours”

In recent years, the mobilization has taken place in the midst of a deep economic crisis that hits large sectors of the population and while prolonged blackouts persist throughout the island, some lasting up to 40 consecutive hours.

Added to this scenario is the uncertainty after the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and the possible repercussions on the supply of oil from Caracas, Cuba’s main energy supplier.
