Silvio Riveros, president of the Association of Fruit and Vegetable Producers of the Department of Caaguazú, demanded that the different institutions of the National Government reinforce their actions in the fight against smuggling.
The leader warned 1000 AM that if they do not have answers from the State, tomato producers will go out again this week to the roads in order to protest against this scourge in order to eliminate unfair competition.
Riveros reiterated that the irregular entry of tomatoes, mainly from Argentina, notably harms local producers, since citizens prefer to access lower prices, regardless of origin.
“Unfortunately, smuggling does not contribute anything, it does not pay taxes, or directly, meanwhile we have to deal with this problem of inflation,” he said.
He pointed out that due to the increase in production costs, tomato growers must offer their products at G. 5,000 or G. 6,000 per kilo on the farm.
