Tom Hanks is a Hollywood actor with two Oscars on his back, but this Saturday he received two other awards that no star wants on his resume: the Razzie or Golden Raspberry awards.
Tom Hanks’ portrayal of Elvis Presley’s former manager in Baz Luhrmann’s biopic of the music legend is cruel and corrupt, according to the 2023 Razzie Awards.
The voters of these anti-Oscars, who reward “the worst of cinema”, decided that Hanks’ job as Elvis Presley’s manager in the biographical “Elvis” it was the worst performance by a supporting actor.
The film has been highly praised and is up for eight Oscars this Sunday. Its protagonist, Austin Butler, is one of the favorites to win the best actor statuette at the biggest gala in Hollywood.
But the look of Hanks donning huge prosthetics to play Colonel Tom Parker, the abusive proxy of the king of rock and roll, it was not well received by several criticswho considered that his signing was the weak point of the film.
To make matters worse, the voters of the Golden Raspberry Awards they also gave him the trophy for “worst couple on screen” to “Tom Hanks and His Latex Loaded Face (and His Ridiculous Accent)”.
At least he didn’t win the worst actor award.
His role as Geppetto in Disney’s new version of “Pinocchio” was considered less terrible than Jared Leto’sfavorite of the Razzies, in the Spiderman movie “Morbius”.
The biographical and controversial film “Blonde”, about Marilyn Monroe, took the trophy for the worst film of the year.
The Razzies are announced a day before the Oscarsand they parody the night when the stars of the tinsel city gather to celebrate themselves.
But they have also earned their criticism.
This year the organizers reversed the nomination for Ryan Kiera Armstrong, actress in the new version of “Firestarter”, then 12 years old.
In announcing the winners on Saturday, the group said the Razzies themselves filled Armstrong’s spot on the worst actress list.
According to a statement, the Razzies “won by a large margin.”
“Well, what can we say? We earned this Razzie,” they said in a satirical speech posted on YouTube.
Last year, the Golden Raspberry Awards launched the category “Worst Performance by Bruce Willis in a 2021 Movie” to include the string of productions that the “Die Hard” actor had shot in a year.
But the award was withdrawn shortly after, when Willis’s family announced that he suffered from a cognitive disorder called aphasia.
The Razzies were first delivered in 1981 in a living room in Los Angeles at the initiative of industry veterans and film grads from the University of California, Los Angeles, who chose the raspberry as a symbol of derision.
