We have previously spoken in this space about the soft power doctrine that since United States decades ago run on your foreign policyr with countries not as advantaged as them in order to influence -according to their own interests- in the event of these nationsa more common practice in Latin America.
The recent decision of the United States Customs Administration of prohibit the entry of sugar produced by the company Roman Central is an example of the attitude previously exposed. According to the authorities of that nation, after an investigation a series of violations of the resolutions of the International Labor Organization about working in forced conditions in the facilities of the largest sugar mill in the country.

However, these actions have a background that must be taken into account when analyzing the situation, in addition to the fact that the affected company is from american capitalor that most of the sugar produced by the company is consumed in the Dominican Republicor that it will take them at least 10 years to reach this decision based on a reality that they have identified year after year during their examination and that they themselves have recognized that they have been overcome.
What is the goal of the United States?
The reason for the decision is nothing more than to increase pressure on the Dominican Republic to give in to the intention of the international community to accept its provisions regarding the Haitian population due to the crisis that we all know is going on in that country. , or at least reduce the intensity of actions to the detriment of illegal foreigners – mostly Haitians – who remain in the national territory.

But what is behind all this? That is the question that many ask themselves, since the United States has not openly or officially expressed any intention towards the Haitian people or the solution to their problem, moreover, it seems that this nation wants everything to stay as it is without having to intervene directly but with the possibility of deciding what happens there if it is necessary and convenient for their interests.
Let us remember that since the Dominican Republic intensified its actions against illegal immigration into the national territory and the consequent rejection by the United States of this decision, wanting to paint the country as “The bad guy in the movie”, situations such as the request for intervention military of the international community have been silenced to such an extent that this issue has not been touched upon any further.
Even if we don’t like it, the Dominican Republic depends to a large extent on two trading partners that are the United States and the Republic of Haiti, so we must know how to stand firm in our decisions, but calculate all the next steps, including those that are going to promote new commercial relations with other nations; yes, vehemently determined not to let ourselves be burdened with a problem that we have not caused, much less for which we are not responsible, thus maintaining the attitude of camaraderie, collaboration, solidarity and diplomacy that has characterized us as a country.
We must expect more and greater attacks with those who will seek to make us give in, because although it seems like a counterproductive decision for the United States, the impact of this measure will not be felt in their territory as much as in the Dominican Republic, since the oversupply of a product can destabilize the market and bankrupt its producers, and that is why the Government has been forced to intervene in the situation.
