The Ministry of Transportation and Communications, through the Directorate of Infrastructure Management and Transportation Services, announced the restart of the activities of the Huancayo-Huancavelica Railway, the Macho Train, starting today. The trips will take place on Mondays and Fridays, with departures scheduled from 6:00 am and returns at 1:00 pm Two hours of travel.
The Huancayo-Huancavelica Railway will resume operations on the Chilca-Cuenca section, covering 57 kilometers across two stations and nine stops, including Chilca, Pilchaca and Cuenca. “This restart of operations will benefit rural communities that depend on the train for their daily mobility and for the transportation of products to zonal and regional markets. In addition, it reinforces the tourism potential of the Junín and Huancavelica regions by facilitating access to landscapes and traditions of the central mountain range,” the MTC noted.
The good contract for the concession of the aforementioned railway was delivered in August 2024 to the Consorcio Concesionaria Ferroviaria del Centro, in order to be responsible for the design, construction, operation and maintenance, renewing the infrastructure, superstructure and rolling stock. This will guarantee the continuity of service on 128 kilometers of track. Market studies are also planned to evaluate preventive maintenance in critical sections and the possibility of extending the service to Mariscal Cáceres.
