Today the extraordinary session of the university assembly is scheduled to evaluate the irrevocable resignation of the rector of the university. National University of PiuraSantos Leandro Montaño Roalcaba, who made his position available for health issues.
A total of 72 assembly members will meet from 10 a.m. this Wednesday in an extraordinary session to define the resignation, the same one that was presented by Santos Montaño on December 30.
As is known, the rector, who is under house arrest for nine months for having received an alleged bribe of 10,000 soles from a supplier, presented his letter of resignation.
The call seeks to accept the resignation, define the vacancy of the rector and call for university elections to elect the new rector who will complete the term until 2028, which must be called by the academic vice-rector of said higher education institution.

The member of the university assembly, Leopoldo Otiniano, maintained that the procedure is resignation, vacancy and calling elections, otherwise the law and the statutes of the National University of Piura would be violated.
“This is established in the law, the resignation must be accepted, the vacancy declared and elections immediately called,” said Otiniano.
He clarified that more than 40 assembly members requested the call, because the rector in charge had not requested it.
“We as assembly members do not try to force anything that is against the law, otherwise we are here to ensure that it is applied correctly and it should have been done immediately (university assembly session) and the rector has the power to do so, but he has not done so.” done,” clarified Otiniano.
UNP Legal Counsel issued an opinion recommending that Santos Montaño’s resignation be declared appropriate.
